Berlinde Deman

Berlinde Deman

Midnight concert (in the brand new AB Salon) by tuba player with a penchant for the 16th century wind instrument known as the serpent

Berlinde Deman (BE) is the regular tuba player with Flat Earth Society Orchestra and also appears with numerous bands and projects in the jazz, theatre and classical worlds – including Ab Baars Trio, Spinvis, Dez Mona, Dick van der Harst, ChampdActionVvolk, jazz trumpet player Dave Douglas, …

After years of fascination with the predecessor of the tuba, she purchased a serpent: a rare instrument from the 16th century. “The many subtle sounds of that instrument are incredibly beautiful”, says Deman. She is in love with the dusty sound of the serpent. Her unique sound already brought her to Graindelavoix, Razen, Hans Beckers, B.O.X, Machinefabriek, …

In 2025, her solo debut Plank 9 was released through New York’s Relative Pitch Records. On it, she explores the extent of slowness with the serpent and loops/electronics. Far from the bustle of everyday life.

Deman: “There is so much noise pollution around us. There are quiet carriages on trains that are never respected. We live in a sea of noise. I hold an instrument from a time before electricity, when the world’s volume was, I reckon, many decibels lower. That sense of stillness is something I very much want to bring into my music.”

Enter: Berlinde Deman’s midnight(!) concert for those who want to ease into the night gently. And that in our brand new AB Salon.
