Saxophonist Bertel Schollaert and Amenra sound engineer Hein Devos present works by contemporary composers Alberto Posadas and Genoël von Lilienstern
Classically trained saxophonist Bertel Schollaert (BE) (Nadar Ensemble) and regular Amenra sound engineer Hein Devos (BE) take as their starting point in this performance the low notes of the baritone and bass saxophones, which are manipulated acoustically and electronically.
Devos' sound design engages in conscious dialogue with the acoustics of the space, with the aim of completely surrounding the listener with sound. The quote from the writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, ‘Music is liquid architecture; architecture is frozen music,’ definitely applies here.
The repertoire includes Objetos de la Noche (For Baritone Saxophone) from 2015 by the Spanish composer Alberto Posadas, in which the sonic possibilities of the baritone sax are extended by using a spring drum in the bell. The result is a dark and overpowering composition that is both refined and savage.
Also on the programme: TAL by Berlin composer Genoël von Lilienstern, in which the notes of the bass sax ultimately become a physical experience.
