Wie de openingstrack Just because I have a Dick doesn’t mean I’m a Man beluistert uit Joy Guidry’s (VS) debuut Radical Acceptance weet meteen met welke demonen ze kampt. Guidry worstelt met vooroordelen, mental health issues, racisme en het gevecht daartegen. Innerlijk en naar de buitenwereld toe.
Die strijd beslecht ze muzikaal op de scheidingslijn tussen ambient, gospel, experimentele jazz en textured electronics waarbij ze naar eigen zeggen “the spiritual and sonic terrains of living with Bipolar II disorder” exploreert.
Enter: haar prachtig uitgepuurde album Five Prayers (2025) dat op haar eigen label JAID verscheen. Guidry: “Five Prayers is really a direct line into my soul, into my brain, and into my thought processes. … An offering of meditative, ambient, and soul-stirring compositions born from a year of mental health challenges and spiritual rediscovery.”
