Seven-member band (containing The Notwist members) performs the unique oeuvre of Elijah Minnelli
He goes by the name Elijah Minnelli (UK), he hails from the fictive city Breadminster – after which his label Breadminster County Council is named – and he is our new dub hero. The reason? His unique signature sound: an idiosyncratic mix of vintage calypso, mento, cumbia and beguine, infused with leftfield dub and reggae.
The evidence: his debut – and also his chef d’oeuvre - Perpetual Musket. The Guardian called it “a brilliant collection of traditional folk covers through the lens of dub reggae”. The album promptly landed in their Top 10 Best Folk Albums of 2024.
The follow-up Clams As a Main Meal – featuring British reggae legend Dennis Bovell – confirmed his unique status. The Quietus: “A highly individual take on dub production.” KLOF magazine: “This album is a profound love letter to folk tradition, dub ideology, and the joy of uninhibited collaboration.”
Enter The Alien Dub Orchestra (DE), consisting of core members of The Notwist (brothers Markus and Micha Acher) and members of Caribbean folk trash band G.Rag y los hermanos Patchekos. All share a great love for the work of Elijah Minnelli, and together they transform his studio work into vivid live versions.
Elijah on that: “The idea of real, competent professionals playing something you’ve muddled together on a computer in a damp basement is quite overwhelming. Hearing them interpret and improve these melodies is a real joy and privilege.”
