"Iconic figure of the modern UK underground who evolves in the shadows where most won't look, but those who do will forever be dazzled and amazed." (The Quietus)
Sometimes a quote from The Wire says it all: ‘Richard Youngs is a highly prolific artist, with a vast discography that encompasses psychedelic folk, avant rock, synth pop, noise, unaccompanied voice, improvisation and myriad forms of electronic music. His experimental approach to live performance has seen him read out the text from 171 used train tickets, play guitars with his feet and present a karaoke-style playback of his electronic pop album Beyond the Valley of Ultrahits.’'
Glasgow-based Richard Youngs (UK) has been active since 1979 and can look back on an extensive and versatile body of work that has seen the light of day through various labels such as No Fans, Jagjaguwar, VHF and Table of the Elements. He is a talented multi-instrumentalist whose range includes guitar, vocals, shakuhachi, accordion, theremin, dulcimer and home-made synths. His early recordings were characterised by minimalist lo-fi techniques using tape recorders and minidiscs.
For years, Youngs performed only sporadically, mainly in Glasgow, but in recent years he has toured more frequently. His recent concerts place more emphasis on vocals, inspired by laptop-based performance. His latest album, Hidden, was released in 2025 on Oren Ambarchi’s renowned Black Truffle label.
