‘Their fearless music is a blend of field recordings from Tehran and samples of Shiite ceremonies with hip-hop beats, free jazz accompaniments, dub, ambient and noise.’ (CLOT Magazine)
Saint Abdullah is the moniker of the New York-based Iranian brothers Mohammad and Mehdi Mehrabani-Yeganeh (IR/CA/USA), who grew up in Canada. Their mission statement: ‘We exist to test the revolutionary possibilities within sound and sonic storytelling, as a means to find a vision of the future and for building cultural dialogue today.’
This has led to intriguing musical collages such as Patience of a Traitor from 2021 (on Nicolás Jaar's Other People label) and Chasing Stateless (on Mike Paradinas’ Planet Mu label), and they have also worked with Armand Hammer (Billy Woods x E L U C I D) and Moor Mother.
Over the past few years, they have formed an organic alliance with drummer/percussionist Jason Nazary (USA), formerly one half of Anteloper (his duo with the late jaimie branch) and also a member of the jazz/rap ensemble WRENS (also performing at BRDCST).
That alliance has already yielded two albums: Evicted in the Morning (2023) and, more recently, Wiretaps for Oral (2025), which they themselves describe as ‘a Freedom Now Suite for a new era of anti-war marches and state oppression’ – a clear nod to jazz drummer Max Roach’s politically charged 1960 album We Insist! Freedom Now Suite.
For an interesting deep dive into this movement, this is indispensable BRDCST reading: ‘Far beyond novelty or experiment, 2025 was the year that crossover projects rejected genre labels for endless sonic possibilities.’ Hybrid Vigour - The Wire
