“Elements of shoegaze, witch house, cloud rap and Irish traditional music” (Rough Trade)

BRDCST labelfocus: AD 93 (Label of The Year 2025, Pitchfork) 

Met Moin, Coby Sey, SKY H1, Holy Tongue, Valentina Magaletti en recent nog revelatie YHWH Nailgun, passeerden reeds flink wat acts van het Londense label AD 93 de revue tijdens BRDCST. In 2026 leggen we bewust de focus op het label met eregasten als james K, feeo, Lankum-offshoot One Leg One Eye en Olan Monk. 

Toeval of niet: Pitchfork katapulteerde het label recent nog tot Label of The Year 2025 en bestempelde het tot “one of the most interesting, unpredictable, and ambitious record labels working right now”. Alsook: “Daring, heartfelt, and unpredictable, AD 93 has released some of the best music of the year. AD 93’s diverse roster is something more like an ethos: a shared spirit of adventurousness, disregard for convention, and raw emotion.” 

Olan Monk presents Songs for Nothing (AD 93) 

Achter de moniker Olan Monk (IE) schuilt de Ierse performer en experimentele artiest Olan Andrew Stephens, tevens medeoprichter van platenlabel C.A.N.V.A.S. (zie Elvin Brandhi en AD 93 act Alpha Maid). 

Met hun jongste album Songs for Nothing schuift hun elektronische aanpak naar de achtergrond en eerder richting “vaporised dream pop, caustic shoegaze, and aspects of Ireland’s sean-nós singing tradition”. Hoewel dat laatste verwijst naar ‘Ierse songs in oude stijl’, neigt een song als Drón Feadóige (lees: ‘fluitende drone’) dan weer naar “Sunn O)))'s molasses-slow, bass-heavy drones” volgens Boomkat. 

Olan Monk kreeg op Songs For Nothing hulp van landgenote Maria Somerville. In ruil speelde Monk mee op haar bejubelde 4AD debuut Luster. Nog meer luisterplezier? Monk is ook te horen op het album You Never End van labelgenoot Moin, alsook op het debuut van (de illustere superband) Princ€ss.
