Aphex Twin approved x “A polyrhythmic assault, running the gamut from industrial techno to doom metal.” (The Guardian)
We are quite proud of the bond between AB and Ugandan label Nyege Nyege Tapes, which has been trading in East African outsider music since 2016. In 2022, Nyege Nyege Tapes curated during BRDCST with a fine lineup that included Duma (with frontman Lord Spikeheart, also a guest at this BRDCST edition), MC Yallah, Arsenal and Ecko Bazz.
But the first time Nyege Nyege Tapes camped out at AB was in 2018(!) for a two-dayer that featured the likes of DJ Kampire, Sound of Sisso, Otim Alpha, Nilotika Cultural Ensemble and… Nihiloxica!
Nihiloxica (UG) is still the collaborative alliance of Nilotika Cultural Ensemble – a traditional percussion band from Kampala – and producers Spooky-J (NL) and PQ (UK). Following a first EP on Nyege Nyege Tapes, they found a home with quality Brussels label Crammed Disc – on which two percussive/explosive albums were released: Kaloli (2020) and Source of Denial (2023), a veritable indictment of the UK’s bureaucratic immigration politics.
Noteworthy: the logo on their latest album leans heavily toward black metal aesthetics. Boomkat refers to the avant-garde-noise act Lightning Bolt: “Twitchy Bugandan rhythms x sludgy, technoid mutations that are more Lightning Bolt than Luke Slater.”
Also a big fan: Aphex Twin, who had them open for his set at the legendary London club Printworks. They instantly returned the de favour with an actual Aphex Twin mix on Soundcloud.
