Icelandic thereminist on the borderline between modern classical, ambient & experimental sound art
Icelandic artist Hekla (IS) belongs to a select group of musicians who have entirely mastered the theremin – that mysterious electronic instrument invented in 1919 by the Russian Leon Théremin. Thanks to her classical background, she creates a unique world of sound ranging from rarefied melodies, whispering overtones and deep, resonant bass. Her music moves between modern classical, ambient and experimental sound art, always imbued with an intense, almost cinematic vibe.
2025 saw the release of her third album Turnar, on which dark soundscapes mingle with neoclassical compositions. The album was unanimously praised by critics and musicians alike.
The Guardian (Album of the Month): "Eerie, wailing sounds over distorted feedback drones … vibrato-heavy harmonies chirrup and throb in agonisingly slow motion."
The Wire: “Cinematic … carefully orchestrated … delicately explores unfamiliar territory with uncanny finesse."
Iggy Pop on BBC Radio 6: "I've never heard a theremin played so well.”
